Johannisberger Erntebringer Riesling Kabinett, 2016
Taste Profile Where it's from
Kabinett Riesling treads a fine line between low alcohol, high acidity and residual sweetness. This is a classic example with great purity of flavour, lime zest and ripe stoned fruit flavours, combined with vibrant acidity, great purity and freshness. Although this is drinking beautifully now, it will age for many years, developing more complex, tertiary flavours and mineral notes. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Germany makes some of the finest white wines in the world, predominantly using the Riesling grape variety. Located close to the Rhine River, the vineyards of the Rheingau (of which Erntebringer is one) are often considered to be the finest source for this noble grape variety, where the climate and soil accentuate the natural acidity of Riesling.
What makes Rieslings from the Rhine so special is the balance and finesse that can be achieved here, with crisp flavours, lower alcohol levels, incredible purity and a refreshing sweetness that makes these wines unique.
German white wines undoubtedly received a (deserved) bad press in the 1970’s but in recent years, a succession of wonderful vintages has seen quality soar. In the modern wine market, the value for money of top German Riesling is second to none. Villa Gutenberg is a small (18 hectare) family owned estate, with vineyards stretching from Rüdesheim to Hochheim.
Goes well with
The balance between crisp, floral, lime driven scents and flavour on the palate, lower alcohol levels and soft sweetness makes off-dry German Riesling a fantactic match with all types of Asian cuisine.
Try it with spicy foods, particularly Thai curries or richer Indian dishes. A great partner for Chinese food too. Also makes a delicious wine to sip on its own, enjoying the freshness, racy acidity and light body.
