The Nest Pinot Gris, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Founded in 1989 in Marlborough, Lake Chalice has 3 distinct vineyard areas with biodiversity and distinct vineyard sites the key. This Pinot Gris had a very short skin contact before fermentation in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The wine then spent a short time in oak adding a little more complexity and depth. With flavours of pear and citrus, there is a hint of sweetness on the finish. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Lake Chalice founded in 1989 was one of the last few family owned vineyards in Marlborough, and managed to maintain this moniker when it sold to family owned St Clair estates in 2016.
The three vineyards and brand continue to be run as a separate operation. The grapes for this wine come from the Eyrie Vineyard, 11 hectares of 20 year old vines located in the Waihopai valley. There the soil is heavy clay, but it is situated over gravel so drains well and is perfect for grapes of the Pinot genus: Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
2017 was a reduced vintage for much of Marlborough with cooler and wetter conditions than normal requiring close monitoring in the vineyard. However those grapes that were harvested were full of the vibrant fruit driven character that this region is renowned for.
Goes well with
Pinot Gris from New Zealand is a delicious aperitif wine. Acidity is never excessive and there is a smooth richness, with a hint of sweetness on the finish.
You can also match this with most types of poultry (chicken and guinea fowl would be a good combination) or lighter pork dishes such as fillet of pork in a mustard sauce.
