Senorio de Ondarre Blanco, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Tempranillo Blanco is a rare mutation of Spain’s famous red Tempranillo grape, and was only identified in 1988. Now approved for white Rioja production, this variety has a short ripening cycle and gives intense flavours combined with lots of bright citrus acidity. Spicy on the nose, there are notes of green apple, lemon and grapefruit on the palate, and a hint of sweetness to finish. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Bodegas Ondare is located in Viana, six kilometres from the centre of the Rioja region. Founded in 1986 Ondarre has established a reputation for high quality wines with an extra level of elegance. The estate uses both French and American oak to provide a lovely balance in their wines.
Made from the white Tempranillo grape grown on the slopes of Ribera del Ebro. The vines are grown in clay based soils with a high iron and chalk content. These soils tend to stay cooler and help to retain water, producing bold wines. Half of the harvest was fermented in French oak barrels and the remaining half in stainless steel tanks and then blended to achieve the optimum balance of structure and freshness.
2017 was a challenging year marked by harsh frosts that affected the vineyards in April, followed by summer drought. Ultimately these factors resulted in a reduced yield. The warm, dry conditions ensured the vines were in excellent health and the harvest was one of the earliest in history of Rioja. The grapes harvested were high quality with excellent fruit-driven expression.
Goes well with
Crisp, fresh and with high acidity, this Tempranillo Blanco is a lovely refreshing aperitif wine.
It can also be enjoyed with seafood – particularly scallops or mussels. The bright acidity makes it an excellent partner for chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce, or simply roasted.
