Winemaster's View

In past decades, Soave gained a reputation for mean, acidic wines. Happily, quality levels had shot up and there are many great Soave’s produced now. Look out for Soave Classico – from the central vineyards planted on volcanic soils. These are highly mineral wines, focussed and with great purity and acidity. This example also shows herbal notes, hints of almond and is typical of superior Soave. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

The vineyard has been in the Tessari family since the early 1900s. However, the estate was renamed Ca'Rugate in 1986, after the the volcanic hills where the vineyards are located.

Now in the fourth generation, Michele Tessari has brought with him a lively, passionate and entrepreneurial spirit. Considerable expansion has taken place in recent years with investment in a new technologically advanced cellar and expansion into the Valpolicella area with the purchase of vineyards in the hilly zone of Montecchia di Crosara.

Ca'Rugate has been awarded the prestigious 'Tre Bicchieri' award rating from Gambero Rosso multiple times, making it one of the most awarded producers in the region and has been hailed by the New York Times as one of the "Top Five producers of high end Soave".

Soave must contain a minimum of 70% of the Garganega grape, and in the past many producers bulked out the remained with other varietals such as Verdicchio and Pinot Bianco which in a lot cases did not do much for the quality. This wine is 100% Gargenega: meadow flowers and elderflower on the nose and crisp and zesty on the palate with a smooth and elegant finish.

Goes well with

Soave is a clean, fresh, direct wine which is great on its own, or with many different types of food. Delicious with grilled goats cheese salad, the mineral quality works beautifully with all types of shellfish.

Try it with a selection of cheeses – particularly a piquant Mountain Gorgonzola, or creamy Dolcelatte.
