Rey Santo, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
A fleshy example of the Verdejo grape, here blended with a small amount of Viura. Notes of lime zest and spice are evident on the nose and palate, with a hint of bitterness on the finish. A subtle herbaceous character adds to the complexity of flavour. White wines from Rueda have the ability to age well and this has the structure, concentration and acidity to drink well for 1-2 years. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Rueda is the source for some of Spain’s best white wines, offering both quality and great value for money.
Unlike the coastal influenced wines of the Rias Baixas, Rueda has a continental climate with very low humidity. What gives white grapes the opportunity to thrive is the cool night-time temperatures, which balance the heat during the day. In addition, the pebbly, free-draining soils around La Seca, Vallaloid, are ideal for the Verdejo variety.
Verdejo is a very versatile grape that has the ability to be delicious when young and fresh but can also age very well, developing many more subtle flavour characteristics. The Sanz family have been producing wines here for 150 years, with Javier now the fourth generation winemaker.
Goes well with
Bright, fresh and full of zestiness, this is a great aperitif wine that also matches lighter dishes such as simply roasted sea-bass, all types of shellfish and white meats.
