Punctum Viognier, 2017
Dominio di Punctum
Taste Profile Where it's from
Viognier is a very rare grape, undoubtedly at its finest in the appellation of Condrieu in the Rhône Valley. The grape is now being planted in many other areas, but to find Viognier grown high on a plateau in central Spain is a surprise. What is even more surprising is how good this version is. It shows the typical rich, peach and apricot fruit, with soft acidity and a plush texture on the palate. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
The Fernandez family were grocers in Madrid when they decided to set up this biodynamic estate from scratch. Their objective was always to make accessible, easy to drink biodynamic wines and what they have achieved in 10 years in nothing short of impressive, with over 100 hectares of vineyards.
High on a gently rolling plateau, they built a purpose made winery cleverly laid out to facilitate the collecting of the grapes, making and storing the wine as efficient as possible.
This Viognier was made with estate-grown grapes from organic farming, free of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, using biodynamic practices to in order to improve the soil structure and enhance the natural cycle of the vines achieving the highest quality grapes. The wine has been gently filtered to keep all natural aromas and characteristics.
Goes well with
The richer, stoned fruit characters of Viognier make this a lovely wine to drink on its own, or with all types of fish. Try it with simply grilled sole, fresh salmon, or roasted monkfish with red peppers.
There is good weight on the palate and fresh acidity here, which will also partner chicken, guinea fowl and pork fillet with a creamy mushroom sauce.
