OVNI Chenin Blanc, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
OVNI is the French acronym for UFO, and reflects the desire of top producer Jérémie Mourat, to avoid certain wine regulations he finds unhelpful. This Chenin Blanc is produced in the Vendée, close to La Rochelle and the Atlantic coast. Showing the typical crisp green apple flavours, backed up with fresh acidity, this has a lovely creamy depth to the texture, with a mineral charged finish. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
A very promising winemaker, Jérémie Mourat is based in Mareuil-sur-Lay in the heart of Fiefs Vendéens which is the western most region of the Loire and only 20km from the coast, and the maritime atlantic is the dominant climactic influence in the region.
Mourat’s vineyards are situated on hillside vineyards overlooking the Lay Valley, and since assuming control in 2000 he has been converting to organic farming,
Jérémie is constantly tinkering with new approaches for his wines. The OVNI label - producing this lovely, textured Chenin Blanc, was created to navigate around appellation rules in a tongue in cheek manner, taking OVNI, which is the French acronym for UFO, and repurposing as “Object Viticole Non Identifié”
Goes well with
Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley is much less well-known than wines made from Sauvignon Blanc.
The bright acidity, green apple and mineral notes will be a great combination with all sorts of foods.
Try with a grilled goats cheese salad, or as an accompaniment to chicken in white wine sauce, or cooked with tarragon.
