Origin Rosé, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
A pale rose colour as a result of minimum skin contact and a short maceration. It has a very attractive nose with great aromas and fruit flavours. In the mouth it feels great and is beautifully balanced and with a refreshing acidity and the juiciness running right through to the end. Not a long finish but the wine compensates in its fruit and overall balance. Perfect summer drinking. - John Brownsdon
About the Wine
Neal and Judy Ibbotson were pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry, first planting vineyards in the valley in 1978 and then establishing Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. They own 160 hectares of vineyard in 10 different Marlborough locations chosen specifically for the attributes of their individual "terroir" and ability to produce top quality grapes.
Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive expertise in viticulture with the talent of one of New Zealand's leading winemaking teams led by Hamish Clark. Since 1994, when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today.
Many believe their Sauvignon Blanc to be one of the best in New Zealand. This rosé however is also delicious and considerably less expensive. 2017 offered generally challenging weather conditions during the ripening and harvest period. However it was a good year for the early ripening varieties such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, which had beautiful small bunches and berries of very good quality.
The fruit for this wine was harvested at night to retain the freshness and capture the fruit flavours, and the grapes spent only a few hours on the skins on order to extract the delicate flavour, aroma and colour. Like many rosés this is a wine for enjoying when young, so don’t hold back!
Goes well with
A versatile rosé wine that has lovey fresh fruit aromas, bright acidity and good weight on the palate.
Delicious served cold (but not freezing!) on its own, it will also be an excellent match with summery salads (try with a Greek Salad), Prawn Cocktail and assorted deli-style meats.
The acidity will also balance the richness of shellfish such as lobster and crab.
