Winemaster's View

Swartland is one of the most exciting wine regions in South Africa. Handpicked with 10% whole bunches used (not destemmed prior to fermentation) this is fermented using natural yeasts and then matured in older oak barrels. Shiraz provides the body and dark fruit flavours; Cinsault (a classic grape variety from the south of France) gives added floral perfume and a lovely rustic edge. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Swartland is located to the north of the town of Paarl in the Western Cape. Paarl is one of the more famous wine-producing areas, along with neighbouring Stellenbosch.

In Swartland, a number of young winemakers have taken the area and are starting to produce some of the Western Cape’s most intriguing wines. The winemaker at Marras is Martin Lamprecht, who learnt his craft from master winemaker David Nieuwoudt at the renowned Cederberg Estate.

Martin has worked in France and the combination of French knowhow, the wonderful Cape climate and some of the most fascinating wine producing soils in the world, are creating wonderful wines.

Shiraz is more famous in Australia but is the same as the Syrah from the Rhône Valley in France. Martin has cleverly blended Shiraz with the Cinsault variety, more commonly found in the Languedoc region of France. This gives a lovely balance between dark fruits, lots of concentration, floral notes and a rustic edge to the tannins. A highly intriguing wine.

Goes well with

Although many South African wines are considered for pairing with barbecued food due to their weight and extraction, this is a more delicate red that will be a lovely match with meats such as lamb, beef and pork.

It will also suit many hard cheeses and be lovely served slightly chilled on a summer’s day.
