Limited Release Roussanne, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
From the same winery as the Limited Release Carignan, this Swartland white is produced in an area with very low rainfall and high temperatures, but manages to retain lovely freshness and mineral elements on the palate. Roussanne is a famous Rhone valley grape and in this Western Cape example gives luscious stoned fruit flavours, great purity, fruit sweetness all enhanced by ageing for six months in oak. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Big open skies, arid deserts, the vast flowing landscape, with its unforgiving climate and rugged bush vines, this is wild country, this is Swartland.
The contrast with manicured Constantia and oh-so-cool Stellenbosch couldn't be greater. But right now, Swartland is the most exciting wine region in South Africa. A new wave of winemakers are making ground-breaking wines from Rhône varietals and it is part of a revolution that has got everybody talking.
The Swartland Winery is producing iconic and award winning wines in this fashionable and dynamic region. The grapes come from 100% old bushvines in the Swartland region This hot, dry climate has an average temperature range of 25°C to 35°C and an annual rainfall of between 450 mm and 600mm, but the altitude of the vineyard, at 300 metres above sea level, creates a cooler oasis in this arid landscape.
This 100% Roussanne Bursting with citrus, melon and layered with enticing stone fruit aromas, follows through to the palate with peaches, stone fruit and citrus flavours, complemented by a creamy mouth feel. A full bodied style with a lingering, zesty aftertaste.
Goes well with
The full-bodied style of this wine and the peachy, almost slightly herby palate make it an ideal accompaniment for light lunches, cheese platters or fresh shellfish.
It also works very well with sushi.
