Hey Malbec!, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Malbec excels in the perfect growing conditions close to Mendoza, Argentina. Matias Riccitelli is the winemaker behind this example – a young winemaker who will soon be known as one of the country’s finest producers. Matias has combined the fleshy, ripe and soft side of Malbec with layers of complex flavours, spice and a bite of acidity to keep the palate fresh. Perfect now, this will improve. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Matias Riccitelli is the son of renowned winemaker Jorge Riccitelli. Having worked at some of the most prestigious wineries in Argentina and several vineyards around the world, Matias used his experience, knowledge and passion and set up his own winery in 2009. His vineyards cover 50 hectares located in three selected sites within the premium growing region of Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza.
The grapes for this wine are grown in two locations: Perdriel and Galtallary. The vineyards at Perdriel are situated at an altitude of 980 metres above sea level, near the banks of the Mendoza River. Proximity to the river provides high levels of water retention in the vines, and the continental climate, with cool winters and mild summers, warm days and cooler nights which give the Malbecs great intensity, notable red and black fruit aromas, minerality and a very gentle structure.
The Galtallary vineyards sit at a higher at 1500 metres. The vines have to work a bit harder at this altitude and a combination of hand pruning and a green harvest ensures the optimum exposure to the sunlight, while concentrating the flavours in the berries.
The result of this blending is a very stylish Malbec, with beautiful aromas of wild dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate on the nose. This is a complex and rich wine with smooth ripe tannins and a long finish.
Goes well with
A deep coloured, fleshy and powerful Malbec, this is a perfect match with grilled steak.
The juicy character of the wine is a great combination with simply cooked meats but also try it with casseroles and meat with sauces such as Bearnaise and Pepper.
It will also be a lovely accompaniment to drier, harder cheeses such as aged Farmhouse Cheddar, Comté and Manchego.
