Winemaster's View

Dating back to 1692, Hartenberg is one of South Africa’s oldest estates. Located in the Bottelary Hills near Stellenbosch, cool breezes and gravel soils make this a great location for wine grapes. This Riesling has all the classic hallmarks of the variety – high acidity, intense lime zest character, intensity and class. Picked by hand, there are up to 25% botrytised (super-ripe) grapes used here. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Established in 1692 Hartenberg Estate has always had very high standards of winemaking.  The winery occupies its own valley in the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch region. The Mediterranean climate, cool breezes channelled down the valley from the ocean and poor gravelly soils are perfect for grape growing.

As a leading member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in South Africa, Hartenberg have established various initiatives to protect the 170 hectares of natural wetland on the farm; to encourage the natural harmony and health in the vines and a sustainable future for the land.

The white wines at Hartenberg offer pure, clean fruit and are elegant and terroir-driven. The Riesling is planted on clay-rich soils and harvested entirely by hand. With 25 % of the grapes showing signs of Botrytis, this wine boasts stone fruit aromas, honeyed petrol notes, lanolin and a vibrant acidity.

Goes well with

A very distinctive wine with honey and lanolin notes, zesty lime acidity and loads of freshness, this will make a wonderful partner with fish dishes. T

ry it with rich lobster, or some meaty, grilled flat-fish such as Turbot and Halibut. The high acidity will cut through richer, cream sauces so match Riesling with poultry dishes or even roast belly of pork.
