Winemaster's View

Verdejo and Viura are the two classy white grape varieties combined in equal proportions, in this vibrant, crisp white wine with distinctive mineral undertones on the finish. Produced from vineyards sited between 600-780 metres above sea-level, modern winemaking techniques have preserved acidity whilst emphasising the lime zest character of Verdejo, allied with floral notes of Viura. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Although it may seem unlikely in a country renowned for its hefty, traditional reds from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, Spain is one of the most exciting sources today of bright, vibrant and distinctive white wines.

Vineyards located around the town of Rueda, approximately 170km northwest of Madrid, are situated at altitudes between 600 and 780 metres, allowing white grapes to ripen fully, but slowly, with cooling night time temperatures preserving freshness and preserving vital acidity.

White wines dominate here, with the lime-driven Verdejo and floral Viura grapes the most common varieties. Sandy soils dominate the region allowing the vineyards to resist the dreaded phylloxera louse, and encouraging a high proportion of old-vines. Verdejo is the most widely planted grape in the Rueda D.O. and often makes up over 85% of the blend.

In this fine example, both Verdejo and Viura are blended in equal proportions.

Goes well with

Bright, vibrant and fresh white wine with abundant acidity and notes of lemon zest, a hint of nut and a mineral aftertaste, Rueda wines are classic accompaniments to all types of fish. They also work beautifully as an aperitif or with chicken, guinea fowl and pork.
