Finca os Cobatos Godello, 2016
Finca os Cobatos
Taste Profile Where it's from
A touch of ripe pear fruit is evident on the palate of this crisp, mineral driven Godello from North-West Spain. Godello shares many characters with the trendier Albarino, but usually offers much better value, and a bit more weight of fruit. Finca Os Cobatos is owned by the Mendez family who have wine properties in Ribeiro, Rias Baixas and Monterrei, with this wine coming from the latter region. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Planted in the early 1980's, the vineyard is one of the oldest in Monterrei, encompassing ten hectares planted to the white grape Godello and the red grape Mencia.
The vineyard soils are made up of sand with quartz which reflect and magnify the sun's rays, resulting in ripe, concentrated fruit. With good drainage, the high sand content means it is resistant to phylloxera.
The vineyard benefits from a high average of sunny days and is the driest appellation in Galicia. Situated at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level, the warm growing period is tempered by cold Autumns due the cooling influence of the Atlantic.
This Godello is a a highly aromatic wine showing zesty citrus aromas combined with ripe stone fruits, a mineral sensation and hint of white pepper. Dry with a refreshing crisp palate of pineapple, tropical fruits and a delicious, dry, citrus finish.
Goes well with
Godello is a grape variety which pairs very well with all types of seafood, as a result of some mineral and slightly salty characters.
Particularly good with grilled prawns, pan-fried scallops or simply cooked flat fish such as turbot. Fresh acidity and gentle stoned fruit notes also make it delicious to drink on its own.
