Ernst Gouws Pinotage, 2016
Taste Profile Where it's from
Ernst & Gouws is a family owned business in Stellenbosch, the Cape’s most famous wine-producing area. Pinotage, South Africa’s signature red, is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Today a more modern style of Pinotage is now emerging – much more refined wines full of red-berry fruit, spicy notes, elegant tannins and subtle oak. This is a fine example of what can be achieved with the variety. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Located in the heart of the premium region for wine production in the Western Cape – Stellenbosch – Ernst Gouws is a family owned business with several generations involved in production.
Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape variety, having been created there in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault (which was know as Hermitage in SA at the time – hence the portmanteau name).
Pinotage produces deep red wines with smokey, brambly earthy flavours with lots of tannins and consequently have historically had a bit of a reputation as a marmite wine; people either love it or hate it. However, some winemakers are adopting a different approach and looking to produce wines that emphasise the fruit characteristics rather than earthy tannins, and this is one such example.
Ernst’s early travels around Europe have convinced him of the importance of ‘terroir’ in influencing a wines character, and this is a blend of Pinotage grapes picked by hand in various prime regions within the Western Cape.
The wine was vinified in the traditional manner and then matured for nine months in French oak barrels.
Goes well with
South African red wines are nearly always a perfect partner with barbecued meats so try this with some spicy sausages, pan-fried steak or pork tenderloin in a mushroom sauce.
Pinotage also has some lovely floral elements making this a good match with more summery foods. Try it with a goats cheese salad or a plate of charcuterie.
