Ernst Gouws Chenin Blanc, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Chenin Blanc is famous in the Loire Valley in France, but the other place where it thrives is South Africa. This lovely wine exudes freshness, vitality and flavours of crisp green apples, combined with a slightly herby, spicy edge. As is normal in the Western Cape, this Chenin has a little more weight than found in the Loire, but the characteristic acidity is still there. A highly versatile wine. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Located in the heart of the premium region for wine production in the Western Cape – Stellenbosch – Ernst Gouws is a family owned business with several generations involved in production.
Chenin Blanc has always been good in South Africa and Ernst’s early travels around Europe have convinced him of the importance of ‘terroir’ in influencing a wines character.
This is a blend of Chenin Blanc grapes picked by hand in various prime regions within the Western Cape. The wine is fermented in chilled stainless steel tanks before resting on its ‘lees’ for another four months. No oak has been used in the production of this fresh, fruity but lively example of top Cape winemaking.
Goes well with
Chenin Blanc is a highly versatile variety that can be enjoyed with many types of food, or simply on its own.
Delicious with all sorts of fish, this is particularly good as an accompaniment to grilled prawns, pan-fried scallops or roasted lobster. Will also complement lighter poultry dishes, or try with a Greek-style salad.
