Domaine des Cigalounes Lirac, 2016
Domaine des Cigalounes
Taste Profile Where it's from
This is a small domaine of 7 hectares, located in the southern Rhone Valley. This area is better known for Chateauneuf-du-Pape, yet some of the other appellations offer fantastic quality and greater value for money. Lirac is definitely underrated, producing distinctive, slightly earthy, full-bodied and luscious reds. A great Autumn wine with dark fruit, a touch of smoke and spiced cherry flavours. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Domaine des Cigalounes is a small seven hectare property, located on the rocky plateau between the villages of Tavel and Lirac on the opposite bank of the Rhône from Châteauneuf du Pape.
Certified as organic since 2012, the vines are grown according to traditional philosophies, in red soils with pebbles. Winemaker, Severine Lemoine has a non-interventionist approach in the vineyard and cellar, and looks for finesse and silky tannins, rather than over-extraction.
Constructed from the classic Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvèdre this is a big wine both alcoholically and aromatically and will benefit from being decanted and breathing for a while before drinking.
Goes well with
Rich reds from the southern Rhone valley go very well with any type of meat, but particularly beef, lamb and venison.
There is plenty of weight here, with some smoky, mushroom notes which will also make a great partner for duck, pheasant or a Coq au Vin.
Also, a versatile wine to enjoy with all types of cheese, ranging from hard, blue to washed rind cheese like Langres or Munster.
