Càtar Montsant, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Pinord is still a family winery, located at Villafranca in north-east Spain. The estate has a long-established reputation for innovation in Organic production, as well as for nurturing native grapes. Many of the vines are over 60 years old. Catar is produced in the D.O. Montsant, from a blend of Grenache and Samsó (Carignan). This is a great value, easy drinking red with rich flavours of ripe, fleshy fruit. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
The story of Bodegas Pinord started more than 150 years ago, when the Tetas family began to make wines on their estate at Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues. Since then, the wines have grown in prestige and the family name has become inseparably linked to the name of Penedés wine.
The vineyards are located in the heart of the DO Montsant, just south of Tarragona, which was recognised as an independent DO in 2001. Influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, the climate is warm with dry summers and a low annual rainfall. The vines are grown at an altitude of 370 metres above sea level, where the soils are a very rich clayey limestone, with a small proportion of slate.
This wine is made from a blend of Grenache and Carignan grapes, the latter is known locally as 'Samso'. After fermentation the wine was aged in American oak barrels for three to four months, softening the resulting wine and imbuing it with subtle oaked notes.
Goes well with
A rich, powerful, weighty but softly textured wine, this is great to drink on its own, or with nearly all types of meat and poultry. This Monsant wine has ripe, elegant tannins and a hint of sweetness that make it a great accompaniment to barbecued meat dishes.
Try it also with roasted vegetables. Also suits all types of cheese, particularly harder varieties such as Spanish Manchego, or a matured Cheddar.
