Blue Edition Velvet Blend, 2016
Taste Profile Where it's from
An unusual, but delicious, blend of Malbec, Pinot Noir and Bonarda. Dona Paula’s vineyards are at heights of over 1,000m above sea level, with warm days and very cool nights. This big diurnal range encourages long ripening, sweet fruit and freshness. Malbec brings dark berry fruits, Pinot some cherry notes and Bonarda some dark fruit and spice. Lovely smooth tannins are evident in this classy red. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery established in 1997. They own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares, and these vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato.
The grapes were sourced from the El Alto vineyard in Ugarteche, Luján de Cuyo. The estate is located at 1,050 metres above sea level, where the climate typically presents warm days and cool nights. This diurnal temperature variation encourages a long ripening period, producing a greater concentration of flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity.
The Velvet Blend is an unusual blend with an intense, complex and vibrant array of fresh fruit aromas on display. Wild berry notes come from the Malbec, cherry flavours from the Pinot Noir and the Bonarda imparts juicy layers of blackberry and redcurrant. This is sophisticated wine with a voluminous palate, silky tannins and a long and pleasant finish.
Goes well with
The combination of intense aromas and smooth tannins make this a very flexible red wine that will pair with many foods.
It will be just as comfortable partnering a pan fried steak with hand cuts chips, as it will smoothly accompany a prune and apple stuffed pork tenderloin.
