Winemaster's View

This unusual variety is undergoing a bit of a revival. A cross between Petit Bouschet and Grenache varieties, Alicante Bouschet is known as a teinturier – one of few red grapes which have red flesh. Often used in blending, it is early ripening and needs careful site selection for top results – achieved here with old vines planted in Saint-Chinian, by one of the Languedoc’s top producers – Viranel. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Owned by the same family since 1551, this property is situated in the AC of Saint-Chinian, one of the best appellations in the wider Languedoc-Roussillon area of south east France.

Saint-Chinian is located to the south of the beautiful but very rugged Montagne Noir, and lies between two other notable appellations – Faugères and Minervois. Today, a new generation of winemakers are taking Viranel forward with Nicolas working at the chateau since 2003, before being joined in 2009 by Arnaud. Together they are trying to emphasise the special qualities found in this region with varied soil types.

Viranel enjoys pebble/gravel alluvial soils, alongside sandstone and limestone terracing. Despite the warmth of this part of France, the elevation and location in Saint Chinian brings cool nights even during the height of summer, giving the wines energy and freshness.

Works well with

With generous, sweet red/dark fruits on the palate, this is a more robust red which goes beautifully with all types of red meat.

Try it with slow-cooked roast leg of duck, rib-eye of beef, and lightly spiced curries. The smooth tannins and juicy character will also make a great match with pan-fried duck breast, and barbecued meat.
