Andeluna 1300 Merlot, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Merlot is much less common than Malbec in Argentina, where it runs the risk of ripening unevenly if grown in hot areas. Andeluna, however, are positioned at altitude in the cool Uco Valley, and are able to achieve full-ripeness with their Merlot. This example has masses of sweet red-berry fruit, combined with soft tannins. The cool nights at altitude contribute to lovely cleansing, fresh acidity. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Founded in 2003, Andeluna is a small boutique winery specialising in premium Bordeaux varietals of world class recognition. The vineyard covers 70 hectares in the beautiful Uco Valley near Tupungato, one of the best subregions of Mendoza.
By night you can often see the moon illuminating the nearby Andes Mountains and the winery was named after this stunning scene. Situated at an altitude of 1,300 metres, the vineyard produces some of the best fruit in Argentina.
The area is characterised by its wide diurnal temperature range, which produces grapes with a great intensity of colour and a distinctive aromatic expression.
The 2017 harvest for Andeluna was perfect in terms of quality and also quantity. The spring was not to harsh, the summer dry and warm and then temperature rose into the harvest resulting in perfectly matured grapes.
Goes well with
Like Argentinean Malbec, Merlot is a great partner for beef, pork and lamb dishes.
Try it with a juicy grilled steak or lamb chops accompanied by Spring vegetables. This smooth, ripe wine is also delicious on its own, or as an accompaniment to cheeses.
