Andeluna 1300 Malbec, 2017
Taste Profile Where it's from
Andeluna is located in the high altitude, cool, Uco Valley to the south west of Mendoza. The lower temperatures here give a very different character to their Malbec – more violets on the nose, dark cherry and plum on the palate. The vines are planted close to 5,000 feet in the Andes foothills, where the dry climate encourages a long-growing season, and healthy, intensely-flavoured grapes. - Andy Howard MW
About the Wine
Founded in 2003, Andeluna is a small boutique winery specialising in premium Bordeaux varietals of world class recognition. The vineyard covers 70 hectares in the beautiful Uco Valley near Tupungato, one of the best subregions of Mendoza.
By night you can often see the moon illuminating the nearby Andes Mountains and the winery was named after this stunning scene. Situated at an altitude of 1,300 metres, the vineyard produces some of the best fruit in Argentina.
The area is characterised by its wide diurnal temperature range, which produces grapes with a great intensity of colour and a distinctive aromatic expression.
The 2016 winter was intense and harsh with heavy snowfall in the Andes Mountains. Late frosts combined with menacing, intense cold breezes reduced yields in the 2017 vintage. However warmer weather later in the season, combined without any significant rainfall or hail events helped to revive the vintage resulting in impeccable, healthy fruit.
Goes well with
As with most Malbecs, there is plenty of weight here, with notes of violet, a hint of chocolate and dark berry/cherry flavours. T
his is good on its own but also fantastic with all sorts of meat. Traditionally paired with Beef, try this Malbec with a simply grilled Fillet Steak, or Beef Casserole.
It also pairs well with spicy foods – try it with an Indian curry, and all types of game, and duck.
