Winemaster's View

Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine estate, dating back to 1685. Located to the east of Table Mountain, the vineyards are cooled by breeze from the nearby ocean. Sauvignon Blanc thrives in these conditions, with ripe flavours of citrus and elderflower, with an herbaceous undertone. Excellent purity of flavour is combined with direct, fresh acidity making this a standout Sauvignon.  - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Apart from the excellence of its wines, Groot Constantia is notable for other reasons. First, it is South Africa's oldest estate and one of South Africa's most visited tourist attractions. Secondly, it is owned by the government!

In 1685 Cape Governor Simon van der Stel built a farm in the foothills of Table Mountain, which he named Constantia. Groot Constantia received world acclaim from Napoleon, Bismarck and King Louis Philippe of France who was the biggest single buyer of Groot Constantia wines.

They had to sell to the Cape government in 1885 after phylloxera ravaged the vineyards. Today the estate covers 165 hectares of which 87 hectares are planted, with vineyards tucked into the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain.

This wine comes from various blocks that vary between 88m and 233m above sea level. All the slopes are south to south east facing. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of this top quality wine.

Goes well with

Fresh, zesty and full of bright acidity, this Sauvignon Blanc is a combination of some of the riper characters from New Zealand with the more herbaceous, grassy styles from the Loire Valley in France.

Try it with fresh goats cheese, either with a cheeseboard or with grilled goats cheese salad. Also a great match with all types of simply cooked fish such as halibut, plaice and salmon.
