Winemaster's View

A fine example of why Bordeaux is still the centre of the world’s fine red wine trade. This stylish wine is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, aged for 12 months after fermentation in oak barrels (25% new). 2015 was a classic year, with ripe, healthy fruit, and more plushness than used to be seen in wines from the Medoc. Fine-grained tannins and the ability to age complete the wine. - Andy Howard MW

About the Wine

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs from the new world, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

The Medoc district of Bordeaux, amid its coastal lagoons, sand dunes and pine forests, is home to four of the world's most prestigious wine villages: Paulliac, Margaux, Saint Estephe and Saint Julien.

Although most wines are sold under the more generic Medoc appellation, over the last few decades producers in the Medoc have appropriated much of the vinicultural and winemaking techniques of the grand chateaux and are producing exceptionally good and much more affordable wines.

Château Le Pey is a good example of this with a total of 49 hectares of vines located 10km north of Saint Julien is one such example, with vineyards planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot they produce lovely, affordable wine.

Goes well with

Structured red Bordeaux wines have always been designed to accompany food.

This can range from rich, hearty meat stews, to grilled sirloin steak. Perhaps the best meat combination with the fine-grained tannins, hints of smoke from the oak, and black and redcurrant fruit flavours, is roasted lamb.

Also, a very good partner to virtually all types of cheese.
