This pure Viognier has a medium pale straw colour with hints of marmalade and apricots on the nose. There is also some evidence of careful barrel-ageing. It’s flavour is smooth with a very agreeable acidity balance. The wine is just off-dry. I find it a delicious fruity wine suitable for aperitif drinking or with a meal. - John Brownsdon MW
About the Wine
Château de Campuget was established in 1942 and is a top quality estate near Nîmes, which is steeped in history. The Château itself was built in 1753 and at the same time the first vines were planted, prompting the 1753 range of wines which mark this historic date. The fusion of tradition and progression unite in the cellars here, producing wines with integrity and finesse from a wide range of traditional Rhône varieties.
2017 saw a mild winter and spring, followed by colder temperatures in the early part of summer. Rainfall events during the flowering period resulted in reduced yields. However, the latter part of the summer saw warmer, drier weather which led to ideal growing conditions for the vines.
Goes well with
With a rich, stoned fruit character on the palate and moderate acidity, this Viognier is delicious to drink on its own but combines well with many types of food.
The fresh fruit flavours will go beautifully with summer salads and lighter poultry dishes such as roast chicken and guinea fowl. Simply grilled fish – sole, plaice and sea-bass – and spicy prawns make another delicious match.
