Winemaster's View
Made by one of the best producers in the Languedoc region of South East France, this classy blend of red grape varieties is both refined and intense. Pic Saint Loup is seen as a benchmark appellation for wine production – a limestone dominated area on steep slopes. Syrah provides the power and dark fruit, Mourvèdre gives intense, smoky notes and Grenache grapes give the wine a lush, soft finish. - Andy Howard
About the Wine
The Orliac family were early pioneers who, convinced that Languedoc could give birth to exceptional wines, started to put their ideas into practice in the late 1970's.
Jean and Marie-Thérèse Orliac established themselves in the Valflaunès valley, in the the hinterland of Montpellier, between the Seranne mountain and the Pic Saint-Loup. However it wasn't until Jean and his family replanted all the vineyards that they were able to bottle their own wine in 1990. The vineyards are a patchwork of small parcels over many different soil types (mostly limestone) and expositions. All vines are grown without the use of chemicals.
Bergerie de L'Hortus Rouge is the second wine of L'Hortus, the first being the Grand Cuvee Rouge. However in terms quality/price it is standout. A blend of Syrah, Mourverdre and Grenache is rich, smooth and elegant delivering silky black fruits with a complex, slightly minty finish.
Works well with
Red meats – beef, lamb, venison. Also great with mature cheeses such as Cheddar, Comte, Etorki.
